Valses nobles et sentimentales - VIII. Epilogue- Lent [4:37] Comments: Ivo Pogorelich’s performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is hardly tailor-made for ‘easy listening’ or for musical philistines (as in Schumann’s time, they are still very much with us). Magnificently unsettling, he offers a re-creation of the most concentrated force and drama, articulated with a crystalline mastery. Received wisdom is challenged at every level and doubting Thomases provoked to speak of exaggeration or undue idiosyncrasy can usually be answered by reference to the score. Pogorelich’s cleansing and revitalizing is at once evident in the opening “Promenade” where each single crotchet and quaver is accented precisely as marked before Mussorgsky’s more subdued chordal extension. “The gnome” is truly vivo and meno vivo with the sharpest differentiation between fortissimo and piano, while in “The old castle” the troubadour sings his song of “old, unhappy, far-off things/And battles long ago” with the most arresting sense of the composer’s con dolore marking. The central and relative calm of “Tuileries” is played in a touchingly unfamiliar way and if “Bydlo” commences fortissimo rather than piano, is more inclined towards pesante than sempre moderato, the effect is both uncompromising and indelibly Russian. “Unhatched chickens” is ideally rather than manically paced (memorably scherzino and vivo leggiero) while “Limoges” is clarified with a prodigious force and mastery. “Catacombe” and “Con mortuis in lingua mortua” provide an oasis of pulsating and shimmering calm, and how cunningly Pogorelich differentiates the semiquavers and tremolandos at the heart of Baba-jaga’s frenzied flight. A magisterial view of the “Great Gate of Kiev” concludes a performance of rare poetic verisimilitude, a reminder of music fired at “point blank range” and of the “fiercest modernity” (Pierre Jasmin in his superb accompanying notes). To an even greater extent Pogorelich’s way with Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales is not for the faint-hearted. But if his lavish rubato and inflexion and sometimes moonstruck tempos make conventional Francophiles throw up their hands in despair, and turn to more accommodating interpretations, I can only say that Pogorelich’s ideas are more acute than arbitrary, a richly personal response to Ravel’s demands for freedom and fantasy (avec une expression intense, peu plus lent et rubato, mysterieux, etc.). True, Pogorelich’s tempo for No. 3, where modere becomes lent will cause comment, his sudden vif in No. 6 set the fur flying. Yet such is his magic and focus that the results are fascinating and hypnotic, particularly when backed by such million dollar pianism. You may well end simultaneously in a critical frame of mind yet pondering when you last enjoyed Ravel’s piquancy and “subtle correspondences” (Jasmin again) so much; a delicious paradox magnificently recorded and presented by DG.' Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain [00 28]02. Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition [00 20]Comments: The CD issue of Telarc's famous Mussorgsky coupling deserves a special accolade. It represents the high-water mark of this small american company's extraordinarily confident creation of a highly-spectacular and yet natural orchestral balance, with the use of simple microphone techniques. Jack Renner, the company's President, was well aware of his debt to the late Bob Fine of Mercury, responsible for the pioneering series of mono recordings of the fifties and stereo recordings of the sixties, using at first one and then two or three microphones; also the impressive late fifties RCA stereo recordings achieved with similar techniques, recording Reiner in Chicago and Munch in Boston. Yet the Telarc digital recordings, following in this same tradition achieved new standards, especially in the glowing acoustic of Severance Hall, Cleveland. The series made with the Cleveland Symphonic Winds under Fennell and the full Cleveland Orchestra under Maazel create a vivid impression of realism, of the full panoply of wind or orchestral tone spread out in a natural perspective before the listener, the only quirk of balance being an occasionally over-insistent bass drum. The coupling of Pictures and Night on the Bare Mountain dates from 1979 (the year of Decca's digital LP Debut with Boskovsky's New Year Strauss family concert) but is in my view in advance of anything that the multi-national companies were achieving digitally at that time. The sonic splendour of the closing picture, ''The Great Gate of Kiev'', with brass and strings converging in a glorious amplitude of tone, capped by the cymbals, is one of the most exciting climaxes I have heard on a disc. It richness is anticipated at the very beginning of Night on the Bare Mountain (it comes first) which is arresting from the opening bars. Both performances are fine ones . . . . Abbado (DG) and especially Solti on Decca (where the clarity is clinical) offer rather sharper detail, but the Telarc climaxes are special. -- Ivan March, Gramophone Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/209677185/Cx_1979_PicturesLoMaClev.rar (James Crabb & Geir Draugsvoll) ![]() Album : Duos for Classical Accordions Composer(s) : Mussorgsky, Stravinsky Performers : James Crabb & Geir Draugsvoll Release date : 2005 Label : EMI Classics Number of discs : 1 Total size : 52,5 MB Total time : 00 47Individual track details : 01. Little is lost in this "de-orchestration"--for example, percussion passages are dealt with by whacking the accordion's sides. Stravinsky's Tango also lies well on the instrument, but the players miss the music's ironic bite. James Crabb and Geir Draugsvoll recast Pictures at an Exhibition with dazzling ingenuity. Their prim and spotless virtuosity, however, transforms Mussorgsky's raging, elemental lion into an agreeable, domestic kitty cat. Nevertheless, accordion fanciers will be enticed. Das Heldentor von Kiew @320 Kbit/s mp3 Modest Mussorgskijs Pianosuite Pictures at an Exibition belongs certainly to the most frequently arranged works of the so-called classical literature. The contemplation of the original roots of this work animated the Granados Trio to arrange the pictures for their line-up. Remembering that the Pictures at an Exhibition are really a series of piano-miniatures, having structurally more in common with the other piano-cycles on this CD than with the orchestral excesses of the everyday symphony, one can lend an ear in confidence to this version. Inspired by an exhibition of the unpublished works of his suddenly deceased painter-friend Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgskij created in 1874 a cycle of piano compositions, inspired by the ten exhibits. The composer sub-divided these ten compositions by adding Promenades, short preludes and interludes, which render in a way the observers subjective impressions. Their main theme runs characteristically through the whole work. The actual pictures open for the listener a whole palette of varying moods and nuances of expressions: the very nearly expressionist grotesqueness of Gnomus is relieved by the melancholy sing-song of Vecchio Castello. The francophile and playful Tuileries with their playing and teasing children, contrast to the Russian melancholy of Bydlo, picturing the unspeakable labour of towing the oxencart. The version of the delight Ballett der unausgeschlüpften Küken, brought to attention by nimble pizzicati and playful ponticello, flows into the equally grave and pitiful picture of Samuel Goldenberg und Schmyle - the rich and the poor jew. The market-place from Limoges paints on the other hand a humorous scene, in which the bickering and the nagging of the market women lead on into musical absurdity. The contrast to the following double movement Catacombae and Cum mortuis in lingua mortua could not be greater, a dark musical Memento Mori, which overcomes the listener through layers of discords and through chorale melodylines. With the ***** of a whip, the riding witch Baba - Yaga breaks from the solemnity and in one rapid mephistolic ride, carries the listener to the concluding finale - the Heldentor. This majestic construction inspired Mussorgskij to equally splendid and devout tones, until at the climax of the movement the promenade theme realites, and with the original promenade `s festive and optimistic gesture the Pictures at an Exhibition come to an end. Well, Stoky’s is certainly, again, darker and heavier, but it also betrays his impatience, well known from his Bach transcriptions, with holding a scoring beyond a single phrase, or even half-phrase. In other words, the orchestration is self-conscious in its obsessive variety. ... Note that Stokowski left out the two most French movements, “Tuileries” and “Limoges,” and preferred an exceptionally fast tempo for “Bydlo,” whipping the oxcart along at sports-car speeds. Finale, Adagio lamentoso @ 256 Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com The effective retirement of Carlo Maria Giulini has left the concert world without one of its most singular maestros. Equaled by few in Mozart and Verdi operas, his select concert repertoire is equally distinctive. Both works featured here receive dynamic and subtle studio recordings; the 1959 Pathétique, in particular, is an absolute classic. Maybe this live Edinburgh Festival account doesn't have the same control and symphonic integrity, but it's a gripping performance all the same. Giulini has a very Italianate ease with Tchaikovsky's melodic generosity, but never at the expense of the work's originality and tautness of structure. The third movement march is powerful and intense--no question of the audience applauding here--while the finale is passionate but never sentimental. Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was a Giulini favorite; clearly he reveled in its orchestral sophistication. The present account sacrifices studio poise for live excitement, to thrilling effect. You'll need to make allowances for the limited 1961 sound, but as the "Great Gate of Kiev" reaches its spine-tingling apotheosis, the sense of "being there" is palpable. --Richard Whitehouse Part1: http://rapidshare.com/files/179488658/Cx_2000_PicturesGiulini__256.part1.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/179491483/Cx_2000_PicturesGiulini__256.part2.rar Orchestre de Paris Tchaikovsky: Pianoconcerto No. 1 Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition ![]() Artist: Alexis Weissenberg, Herbert Von Karajan, Orchestre de Paris CD title: Tchaikovsky/Mussorgsky Release date: 1988 Label : EMI Catalog #: CDM 7 69381 2 Number of Discs: 1 Genre: Classical Type: MP3 format sound Quality: 192-320 Kbit Time: 01 00Info: Full booklet scan included Tracklisting: Tchaikovsky , Piano Conc. Le Semaine Grasse (Shrovetide Week) @ VBR mp3 Transcibed and Performed by JEAN GUILLOU, ORGAN Recorded at the Great Kleuker-Steinmeyer organ of the Tonhalle, Zürich In composing these musical Pictures, Mussorgsky not only acheived a true synesthetic phenomenon, but also created a completely original sonic architecture, unprecedented and quite independant of any previous mode of musical expression. This uniqueness stems primarily from the motifs used to represent the Pictures which, like the various models that serve as a painter's subjects, are incongruously dissimilar and remain perpetually estranged from one another by virtue of their diversity, yet are linked by the artist's stylistic language. Also in response to the logical necessity to unify the work as a whole, Mussorgsky created a series of interludes entitled "Promenades", the theme of which pervades the entirety of the compositions. - Jean Guillou - Translated by Lucien Gerber Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/209874487/Cx_1988_PicturesGuil.rar Valéry Afanassiev ![]() Album : Pictures at an Exhibition Composer(s) : Modest Moussorgsky Performer : Valéry Afanasiev Release date : 2003 Recording date : 1991 Label : DENON Number of discs : 1 Total size : 167 MB Total time : 01:04:55 Individual track details : Pictures at an Exhibition 1. After winning the 1970 Reine Elisabeth (Queen Elizabeth) piano competition in Brussels, Afanassiev's international career took off. While touring Belgium, he made the difficult decision to seek political asylum, eventually becoming a Belgian citizen. Afanassiev's chief repertoire is primarily based around the Romantics. His recordings contain music by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Mussorgsky, Chopin, and others. He also performs in chamber music groups and has played with Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky. Afanassiev has also tried his hand at conducting and has modeled his performances around the great conductors Wilhelm Furtwängler, Willem Mengelberg, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, and Hans Knappertsbusch. Afanassiev has a second career as a writer, with a number of novels published and plays based on Modest Mussorgsky's piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition and Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana to his name. Afanassiev resides in Versailles and concertizes worldwide. ~ "Blue Gene" Tyranny, All Music Guide Part1: http://rapidshare.com/files/209651744/Cx_2003_PicturesValAf__320.part1.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/209655472/Cx_2003_PicturesValAf__320.part2.rar |

The Great Gate at Kiev @ 320Kbit/s mp3 + APE & CUE Two kinds of loud sounds in the natural world have been growing on the earth since time immemorial. One is the roll of thunder, the other the sound of volcanic eruption. Both of them were feared by mankind for many centuries as the anger of God. However even the roll of thunder has been proved to be the sound caused by an electric phenomenon - that is, it is an electronic sound. Volcanic sound, on the other hand, is produced by the eruption, impact and rubbing of the substances involved; later such dynamic sounds were made by tools - hammers, bellows to make fire, etc. With the passage of time some of these tools were gradually transformed into musical instruments. At present the method of blowing, beating, rubbing, etc., are incorporated into many musical instruments in the symphony orchestra. Electric musical instruments, on the other hand, did not come into existence until the present century. In 1927 Leon Theremin devised the first electric musical instrument, whose pitch was controlled by placing the hand near to or away from its vertical rod. In 1928 Maurice Martenot, a French musician, invented the ondes martenot, which is considered the father of the present music synthesizer. It has been said that electric sound is not expressive because it is not a natural sound but an artificial one made by a machine. However, I think that natural sound implies the rustle of the leaves by the wind, the murmur of a brook and the sound of the waves beating upon the shore. In pianos, violins, flutes and other instruments the determination of their musical scales and the methods of their resonance are made by the art of mankind, so their sounds are not intrinsically natural but mechanical. Compared to the traditional instruments with a history of many centuries, electric musical instruments have a history of only 50 years. In addition, their shapes are not yet established, so the player is apt to become disorientated. Players of these instruments equivalent in ability to virtuosos of the piano or violin have not yet appeared. I think we must make more effort to study electric musical instruments for the future. I have used a great variety of electrical sound producing and controlling devices, as in my previous album Snowflakes are Dancing. I have been encouraged to believe that my efforts have produced music that is truly expressive, evoking the emotions of a high musical experience. It is very rewarding. - Isao Tomita mp3: http://rapidshare.com/files/212233005/Cx_1974_PicturesTomita__320.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/212238662/Cx_1974_PicturesTomita__APE___CUE.part1.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/212244279/Cx_1974_PicturesTomita__APE___CUE.part2.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/212248326/Cx_1974_PicturesTomita__APE___CUE.part3.rar Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (Kubelik, Chicago Symphony Orchestra) ![]() Album : Pictures at an Exhibition Composer(s) : Modest Mussorgsky, Béla Bartok Performers : Rafael Kubelik, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Release date : 1951 Number of discs : 1 Total size : 135 MB (mp3), 182 MB (APE) Total time : 00 19Individual track details : Mussorgsky/Ravel : Pictures at an Exhibition 1. From 1951, Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was the first of Mercury's "Living Presence" recordings. Of course, it's monaural but, oh, what glorious monaural! There is some noise, to be sure, yet I doubt than anyone would notice. One is too busy admiring the sonic illusion, so alive it feels more like real life than most modern stereo. It's practically anticlimactic to say that the performances of both the Moussorgsky and the Bartok, recorded a little later, are as legendary as the sound. For years, these interpretations were the yardsticks by which all other versions of the works were measured. These were, indeed, amazing recordings for their time and, thanks to Mercury's continuing remastering efforts, continue to give pleasure today. By transcribing well known pieces of orchestral music for solo guitar he has encouraged a trend which could make classical guitar much more appealing and accessible to concert programmers and the general concert going audience. The name Zardoz was rejected followed by the acceptance of the name "Mekong Delta", named after a riverbed in Vietnam. The entire project was started by Ralf Hubert, sound-engineer of Warlock, Steeler and Living Death, and owner of the recordlabel "Aaarrg". The first demo's are recorded with the following line-up: Jochen Schröder (ex-Rage) on guitar Peavy Wagner (Rage) on bass Jörg Michael (ex-Rage and Paganini) on drums Wolfgang Borgmann on vocals Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/213094911/Cx_1997_PicturesMekong__192.rar (Simon Rattle, Berliner Phil.) ![]() Album : Pictures at an Exhibition Composer(s) : Mussorgsky, Borodin Performer : Simon Rattle, Berliner Philharmoniker Release date : 2008 Label : EMI Classics Number of discs : 1 Total size : 102 MB Total time : 01 21Individual track details : Modest Mussorgsky 1839-1881 orch. Nutrocker.mp3 @VBR mp3 Recorded live at the City Hall in Newcastle, England in 1971, Pictures at an Exhibition was ELP’s first live release and, taken as a whole, it pretty much rocks. For the most part an “interpretation” of parts of Mussorgsky’s piano suite of the same name, it begins with “Promenade”, played not on wacky Keith Emerson’s Moog, nor on his Hammond organ, but on the City Hall’s own, 40-year old pipe organ. As in the Mussorgsky original, the “Promenade” theme repeats throughout ELP’s performance, intended to give an impression of a man wandering through an imagined exhibition of the works of the composer’s friend, Viktor Hartmann. Following on from this stately introduction, “The Gnome” is one of the bizarre time-signature-changing synth-orgies that represent ELP at their best. Jazz and something a little like rock in a curious con-fusion. Sadly, the next movement of “Promenade” presents precisely the other side of ELP. Mussorgky’s anthem is treated to a coating of Greg Lake’s endless portentous lyrics. Truthfully, Lake had a great voice, but largely wasted it on nursery rhymes he seemed to believe held the secret of life, the universe, and that other thing: “My life’s course is guided, decided by limits drawn on charts of my past ways and pathways since I was born.” “The Sage” delays us further in Lake’s fantasy world. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, he sings to us tenderly about the very special universal truths that only a former member of King Crimson could possibly understand. Like how time is a river and we’re all stardust. Or golden. Or something. I forget which. Frankly, I fell asleep halfway through. However, the distorted synth whine and wail of the introduction to “The Old Castle” would be enough to wake the dead. On Venus. A full-on rocker, “The Old Castle” eventually segues into a “Blues Variation” on the same theme. These near-seven minutes of frantic polyrhythms and heads-down no-nonsense muso boogie are followed by a third “Promenade”. This one is all about the rawk, and for the first time Carl Palmer’s drums are pushed to the fore, setting the scene for the frenzy that’s to come. And as a final emphatic chord disappears on a drum roll, Emerson and Palmer urge in the marvellous “The Hut of Baba Yaga”. Again, this is the stuff that counts. It might be jazz, it might be rock, it could be a haddock, but now as then, it’s powerful, unique, and quite stunningly passionate. “The Curse of Baba Yaga” continues the theme, slowing the tempo to allow Keith Emerson to coax otherworldy howls out of his keyboards before the bass swells, the drums rap his knuckles, and we’re off again into the overdriven weird, finally to lose control and break into a thunderous, punk rock raw, reprise of “The Hut of Baba Yaga” taken roughly half as fast again as the original. Sadly, the finale, the musically dark and haunting “Great Gates of Kiev/The End” is spoiled by yet more of Lake’s tiresome poetry: “There’s no end to my life, no beginning to my death / Death is life”. Ho hum. In many ways, Pictures at an Exhibition is the poster child for both the best and worst of Emerson Lake and Palmer. For every “Karn Evil 9” or “Baba Yaga”, you have to listen to an awful lot of hollow nonsense and witless balladry; but when the trio get their bombast and excess right, they get it absolutely right. --Roger Holland (PopMatters) Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/213125251/Cx_1972_PicturesEmersonLake_Palmer.rar Pictures at an Exhibition (Emile Naoumoff) ![]() Album : Pictures at an Exhibition Composer : Mussorgsky Performers : Emile Naoumoff, Deutsches Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Igor Blaschkow Release date : 2001 Label : Wergo Number of discs : 1 Total size : 75,9 MB Total time : 00 21Tracks : 1.
