It's not that the game has suddenly become awful, but this year's installment offers very little that it didn't offer last year. Sure, there's a new challenge mode that replaces the End-2-End mode from last year, a few of the bugs have been cleaned up, and a form of the new "weapons" system from the console versions of the game has made it into the PSP game. But these changes aren't enough on their own to warrant another $40 price tag, and when you factor in some of the holdover issues that still haven't been fixed, not to mention some new problems that debut in this year's game, the value becomes even more dubious. This is still a good, solid handheld football game. It just hasn't evolved much from the good, solid football game that came out last year. Unfortunately, that ability doesn't seem to extend to making good basketball games. NBA 07 on the PlayStation Portable had some neat ideas but was a chore to play. That's the case for NBA 08 as well. There are a dizzying number of ways to play the game of basketball, but that's the catch: You still have to play basketball, which is not one of the game's strengths. NBA 08's best feature is conquest mode, which returns from last year in improved form. You select an NBA team with the goal of trying to take over every NBA city by defeating its team. If you challenge then defeat a team, you'll control that team and can challenge other nearby cities. Once a turn, you can even swap players between teams you already control in an effort to fortify a weak team. Taking over the entire map isn't easy because that's the goal for all the other teams in the league as well. They'll aggressively try to take over your cities, so it's important that you don't water down your squads too much or else you'll be easy prey for an attacking team. If you do manage to fend off an assault, you're awarded your choice of any player on that team. There are a few other ways to improve your squad this year. You can train players to develop their attributes, improve a city's rating, and even unlock retired greats, such as Karl Malone, if you take over an entire region. It combined the movement and action of a platform game with the firepower of a shooter, and the end result felt pretty unique. Over time, the formula shifted around a bit, but the Ratchet & Clank games we're seeing today still fall in line with that same blueprint. Revo was also released for the PSP, and it attempts to do the same thing as the console games, albeit with far less enjoyable results. In a sense, Revo on the PSP suffers from opposite issues of its console counterparts. Whereas the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions featured overly tough computer opponents that you couldn't bump off their racing lines to save your life, in the PSP game the opponents are total pushovers. There is next to no challenge in this game, and what little there is has more to do with the off-kilter controls than anything else. Your first impression of Sega Rally Revo is likely to be the one you'll keep all throughout your time with the game because for as much as things change in the game, they ultimately stay the same. The second you get on a track, you'll know that this is pure arcade driving. Cars are incapable of going off track, with invisible barriers causing vehicles to bounce off everything from trees to minor shrubs. Powerslides are the name of the game, no matter the surface on which you might be driving. And there is a wide variety of surfaces on display. From mud-bogged jungles and sandy beaches to the icy, snowy mountains, you'll encounter all manner of terrain as you drive.
