Phần mềm chơi nhạc mã nguồn mở của Mozilla "phá cách" khi hưóng tới tương tác đa phương tiện trên Internet như một trình duyệt mini, hơn là chỉ tập trung vào nghe và quản lý nhạc trên máy tính thông thường.

Nghệ sĩ đưa sản phẩm của mình lên web ngày càng nhiều, trong khi người dùng cũng chuyển dần sang nghe nhạc trực tuyến. Tuy nhiên, các phần mềm nghe nhạc truyền thống tỏ ra không đáp ứng được xu hướng mới này, nhất là người vừa tải nhạc trực tuyến, vừa nghe nhạc qua đĩa CD truyền thống. Chính vì thế, Songbird được Mozilla thiết kế nhằm thu thap nhac trựctuyến càng nhiều càng tốt, trong khi vẫn là phần mềm chơi nhạc đầy đủ tính năng.

Giao diện người dùng
Giao diện Songbird được thiết kế khá hợp lý, thậm chí ngay cả biểu tượng trên Desktop cũng cho thấy chất lượng của phần mềm này.

Giao diện chính của Songbird là một cửa sổ lớn, thậm chí có thể mở ở chế độ toàn màn hình (full-screen) nhằm tận dụng hết không gian giao diện.. Không như các phần mềm nghe nhạc khác, Songbird không đi theo phong cách màu sắc của Windows mà mang sắc xám khá lạ mắt. Tông màu xám-tối trên thực tế khá thích hợp cho phần mềm chạy trên mọi nền tảng từ Linux, Mac đến Windows này.

Songbird gần như là trình duyệt mini có chức năng đa phương tiện. Phần mềm thậm chí có cả nút back/forward, ô địa chỉ và .. tab như trình duyệt “chính hiệu”. Phía bên trái màn hình là bảng danh sách các playlist được tạo tự động, hoặc người dùng tự tạo. Người dùng Songbird có thể lướt web ở một tab, trong khi lên danh sách các đoạn nhạc có trong trang web ở tab khác cùng lúc.
Chức năng

Mozilla tự hào liệt kê hàng chục chức năng của Songbird trên trang chủ, từ nghe nhạc,xem phim trên PC tới lướt web tìm nhạc, nghe radio và podcast trực tuyến cũng v.v.. Qua thử nghiệm ban đầu, khá nhiều trong số đó chưa hoạt động như ý. Như trên đã đề cập, Songbird hoạt động gần như một trình duyệt có chức năng nghe nhạc/xem phim, tập trung vào nội dung đa phương tiện và “lọc bỏ” các nội dung không cần thiết khác.Các hàm API độc đáo cho phép tác giả trang web “giao tiếp” trực tiếp với phần mềm nghe nhạc. Ví dụ, nếu được người dùng đồng ý, website có thể thu thập thông tin về bản nhạc, ban nhạc đang nghe, từ đó đưa ra gợi ý các bản nhạc, hoặc album tương tự.

Là con đẻ của Mozilla, tổ chức khai sinh trình duyệt web nổi tiếng Firefox, Songbird có rất nhiều điểm tương đồng với FF, đặc biệt ở khả năng bổ sung “phụ kiện” (add-on). Khác biệt lớn nhất là Songbird không có cơ chế bảo mật như Firefox, do tập trung vào giải trí đa phương tiện hơn là làm việc. Hơn thế nữa, cơ chế thiết kế của Songbird cho phép chuyển các add-on của Firefox sang cực kì đơn giản.
Tóm lại, đây là ứng dụng miễn phí nhưng mạnh mẽ chuyên dành cho tìm kiếm và thưởng thức âm nhạc ngay trên Net. Tuy một số chức năng không hoạt động như ý như quảng cáo, cũng như khả năng đồng bộ với máy tính/các phần mềm nghe nhạc khác khá yếu, Songbird sẽ có tương lai rất sáng sủa nếu được đầu tư chăm sóc đúng mức, và đi đúng hướng.
