Let's face it: You may want a taste of high-definition DVD production, but, most likely, your major focus remains standard-def DVDs. If so, Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus may prove a good fit. The suite offers decent high-def capabilities, exceptionally attractive menu templates for standard DVDs, and some highly functional editing tools. You'll have to accept some annoyances, though, such as workflow issues when producing high-definition discs, critical functions that have awkward interfaces, and several unintuitive advanced features—particularly the still-image pan-and-zoom.

With this suite, different applets handle authoring of DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blu-ray media. You produce Blu-ray discs (which, like those of competitors CyberLink PowerProducer 4 and MyDVD 9 Studio Premier, will have no menus) using a simple wizard in BD DiscRecorder. I tested direct capture to Blu-ray on two computers, a 2.93-GHz Core 2 Duo–based Dell Precision 390 and a dual-processor quad-core HP xw8400 workstation, both times burning to a Pioneer BDR-101A recorder. Using Verbatim BD-R and BD-RE media, I had no luck at all. I tried TDK media (with the HP xw8400 only) and had slightly better success, but lost audio sync after about 4 minutes. You can accomplish the same end by capturing data to a hard drive first and then writing to Blu-ray media—which works fine—but the process takes longer.

When importing content for authoring Blu-ray and HD DVD, the software converted HDV files rendered from Adobe Premiere Pro into separate MPEG-2 files (consuming time and hard drive space), and wouldn't load files without audio, a feat both MyDVD 9 Studio Premier and CyberLink PowerProducer 4 managed. If you use this suite to output video edited in another program, plan your steps ahead of time to maximize workflow efficiency, and consider writing back to HDV tape, then recapturing in MovieFactory 6 Plus.

Once the software loads the files for a Blu-ray disc, it labels them numerically, and on the Blu-ray player's display you'll see those numbers rather than the more useful filenames, which CyberLink PowerProducer 4 shows. In quality, the Blu-ray disc I created (using the Dell Precision 390) equaled those I made with the two competing products, but burning took far longer—59 minutes 33 seconds, compared with 16:35 for MyDVD and 33:06 for PowerProducer.

Like CyberLink PowerProducer 4, MovieFactory 6 Plus can burn HD DVD discs to traditional DVD recorders for playback on set-top HD DVD players, such as the Toshiba HD-A1, though via a less straightforward path. You have to select an HD DVD project type, which shows a capacity of either 15GB or 30GB, add your videos (taking care not to exceed 4.7GB or 8.5GB for dual-layer), then burn to your regular DVD player. I had to contact tech support to figure out the correct procedure.

You author standard and HD DVDs using the same interface, which includes a suite of very attractive HD templates. I had lots of problems importing files into this program, but capture from DV and HDV worked fine. Although the navigation options limit you to creating menus and chapter menus (no submenus or branching), you'll find lots of advanced menu design functions, including menu-to-content transitions, and you can apply pan-and-zoom as well as motion filters to menus. You can even create text subtitles over your video, a rare feature in consumer-level programs. But as with the slide-show tool and video editor, the interface is cramped, and I found many controls unintuitive.

The slide-show tool offers the most bells and whistles in the suite (although not red-eye reduction). You can do pan-and-zoom, insert text titles, add narration, sync to audio, and more, but I often found the features confusing to use. Worse, Ulead allocates screen space as if it were paying for Central Park South real estate, forcing you to create slide shows in a cramped, 818- by 677-pixel window, though you can preview at close to full-screen size. You can't access the slide-show tool from the Blu-ray application—a failing shared by MyDVD 9 Studio Premier, but not by CyberLink PowerProducer 4. You can, of course, create slide shows in another program and import them for burning to Blu-ray.

Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus's video editing covers the basics. You can create titles and do splitting, for example, and you get Ulead's highly functional multitrim tool, which lets you cut highlights from a longer file, but the cramped screen space allows no heavy editing. New themes that add fun introductions to your videos provide a nice touch, but you'll probably want to perform any serious editing in another program.
