About Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition for pre-release versions of Windows Vista
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition for Vista provides protection against viruses and
security risks for managed and unmanaged clients running on Windows Vista prerelease
builds (32-bit and 64-bit editions). You can establish and enforce antivirus security
policies; retrieve content updates, such as virus and security risk definitions; control
live viruses; configure real-time scanning; schedule virus and security risks scans; and
analyze log events. You can use the Symantec System Center to configure managed clients
running on Windows Vista.
How Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition for Vista works
You can install Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition for Vista as a managed or unmanaged
client. Because the Vista release represents a significant overhaul to the Windows
platform, there are limitations to what you can configure and view from the Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition client user interface at this time. To fully configure
client settings, you must install Symantec AntiVirus for Vista as a managed client, and
then use the Symantec System Center to configure the managed client settings.
Note: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition plans to support complete management and
endpoint protection and functionality for the official release of Windows Vista.
You can perform the following actions on an unmanaged or managed Symantec AntiVirus
Corporate Edition client:
* View the main user interface, which includes server group information, program
versions, and virus definitions file version.
* View Histories, which include Risk History, Scan Histories, and Event Log.
* View Auto-Protect Scan Statistics and Quarantine, Backup, and Repair items.
For unmanaged clients, preconfigured system scans and silent LiveUpdates are scheduled
daily to ensure that your clients are protected and free from viruses and security
risks. These scheduled tasks cannot be modified or deleted. To mitigate the limitations
with viewing and configuring Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition on client computers,
Symantec AntiVirus for Vista lets you perform the following actions on managed clients
from the Symantec System Center:
* Configure real-time scanning and on-demand scans.
* View risks and threat alerts from the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition logs.
* Run LiveUpdate to update virus and security risk definitions.
* Update virus and security risk definitions through LiveUpdate, or VDTM (for 32-bit
processors only)
Note: Virus and security risk notifications do not appear on the Symantec AntiVirus
Corporate Edition client computer running on Windows Vista. You must use the local logs
or Symantec System Center logs to view information about these alerts. The main goal for
the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition for Vista release is to let you install
Windows Vista prerelease builds in your test and production networks, while ensuring
that the computers and your network are protected from viruses and security risks.
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition support for Windows Vista Beta 2
During the installation or launch of Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition 10.0.1.628 on
Windows Vista Beta 2, you may see a Program Compatibility Assistant dialog stating that
the application has compatibility problems with the Operating System, which prevents the
application from installing or running. An update that fixes the problem is available
from the Microsoft Download Center.
Microsoft also plans to release this update via Windows Update in the near future.
Existing customers can download the updated version of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate
Edition for Vista from Symantec's FileConnect System. Please have your product's serial
number available, as it will be required to complete the download. Your serial number
can be found on the license certificate that came with your product. If you are having
